High Res stars - example
3

Sifting through some older shots I found a few starry sky shots I did using High Res mode. It was near full moon if I remember correctly, so not too many stars, but still...

So if anyone was curious if that makes sense, I don't think so. But the merging algorithms do a good job, at least when the star movement is fairly limited.

Anyway, here it goes. Processed in Darktable, no sharpening, I had some fun with noise reduction.

High res version exported to 12mp

Low res version exported to 12mp with the exact same settings as high res version. You can see that you cannot just apply the same settings to a low res image, things just don't work well. The high res version can be pushed much more (not a surprise considering the benefits of merging 8 exposures).

Low res version exported to 12mp with settings tweaked specifically for it. Much better.

High res version exported to 48mp.

So, considering that the stars did trail noticeably during the high res exposure, I was expecting a bit of mess there, but it looks fine.

Still, I would not bother with High Res mode for that kind of stuff. It's hard enough to perfectly focus and while a tiny miss might be ok on a regular shot, things just don't hold up with high res.
