AI-Servo - Birds in Flight focus issue

I have a 70D and 100-400L II lens.

I've been shooting bird-in-flight for quite a while with pretty good results.

After not working on it much for close to a year, I've gone back a couple of times with pretty bad results.

I always use center point focusing except for birds in flight with a flat background (clear sky). Then I use 9 Point center. Never all points.

Using single point center the focus locked on pretty well. However, when I switched to 9 point focusing, what was in focus immediately lost focus. It's as if the camera tried to look for something to focus on and couldn't find the target which was in the middle of the frame.

The focus squares just were not very responsive.

I would appreciate any ideas to get focusing back.

For birds in flight I use AI Servo.
