Dave here are 3 picture all from 3 different cameras. A Canon S90 (Small Sensor), A Panasonic LX100 (1" sensor) and the T2. The Canon and Panasonic were set to 35mm and the T2 had the 23 f/1.4 lens on it which in 35mm terms is a 34.5mm lens.

Canon 6.0-22.5mm lens set to capture a FOV = to 35mm on a FF camera

Pana LX 100 10.9-34mm lens set to capture a FOV = to 35mm on a FF camera

T2 23mm lens

So even though the canon has a 6-22.5mm lens and the LX100 has a 10.9-34mm lens and the T2 with a 23mm lens all of them have basically the same prospective.

It is the lens mm to the sensor size ratio. Just like in the old days a 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 format camera a 85mm lens was equal to a 50mm lens on a 35mm camera. And if you were using a large view camera, like a 8 x 10 a 150mm lens would be a wide angle lens.
