Help with NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Macro lens

Hi, I have a Nikon D3400 and just got the Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Macro lens. My goal is to use it to take photos of really small succulent flowers (some of the flowers are 1-2 cm wide). Below are my initial attempts. As you can see, it's not crisp enough and only partly in focus. What am I doing wrong? Is this lens capable of shooting what I need, which is small flowers photographed inside a greenhouse (I'm new to this, obviously) Thanks for your help!
