SPP Reverse Compatibility

Probably reversible...

The file format for X3F has a specific section where SPP stores settings, so I think what is happening when a newer SPP makes the file unreadable is that it's replacing that section with something that holds more setting data...

It seems like you could grab that section of data from an older existing file, maybe with all settings zeroed out - and be able to replace that in just about any file, maintaining some aspects like date or model/lens info stored.
