Flying with a tripod - can you use your carry-on bag?

Question for anyone that has flown recently:

Does TSA allow you to put your tripod into your carry-on bag on flights (a bag that you put into the overhead storage bin)?  I'm going to be taking a weekend (4 day) trip in September and plan to travel lightly (clothes for a few days, 3 small lenses for my XT-2 and the camera, along with my MeFoto tripod).

Is thiere a problem wit this, or do you they make you put your tripod into checked baggage or check the tripod as checked baggage?
