lowest DX model for good results w/ long lens?

I'll pose a specialized question-

I've become interested in photos of birds at the feeder outside the kitchen window.  I was using a D7200 and 55-300 lens last summer and now I don't have either.  I'm interested in the new AF-P 70-300 VR, or even the Sigma 100-400, but I don't want to spend a lot on the body to use for only this purpose.  For this purpose the body doesn't need a big buffer or fast frame rate, it doesn't need the best AF but needs decent AF, but does need a good sensor and good IQ.  I've been wondering if a used D5300 would be the best bet, or even a used D7100.  I would be searching for a good sale on a used body and wouldn't want to spend very much.  I'm not spending the money on a D500 or D7500 so leave those out.
