Career or hobby?

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions on breaking into photojournalism full-tme.

I am a recent college graduate with no formal schooling in photography or journalism. While attending school, I decided to use photography to earn some extra money. I got set up with a few student media sites and got to cover all major sports as well as editorial pieces. I then got in contact with my hometown newspaper and did some freelance work for about a year.

Since graduating, I decided to post some of my gear for sale, and in doing so, I’ve realized how much I miss weekly photo assignments. Though I don’t mind what I do now, I feel like photography is something I should pursue as a career.

I’ve searched for jobs throughout the past few months but havent really found too much. Which is my main concern; the stability of jobs in photojournalism. I enjoyed working freelance but I’m not sure I would enjoy that lifestyle full-time, espcially if I eventually want to start a family. Does anyone have any advice on this aspect?

Just looking for some insight as I’m ultimately trying to decide whether I should turn my hobby into a career.

Perhaps there are some alternate routes that may allow me to monitize my work?

- Chris
