Teleconverter better than increased zoom range?

Nikon is releasing the AF-S Nikkor 180-400mm F4E TC1.4 FL ED VR. The price indicates that it is highly professional. It may end up steeling the show from Sony's announced 400mm f/2.8 lens for sports photographers (see Sony interview).

I always assumed that a teleconverter is a bad compromise, in particular when combined with a zoom lens. Now Nikon builds a teleconverter into the top notch 180-400 f/4, instead of designing a 180-560 f/4-5.6.

Is a 1.4x teleconverter combined with a 2x zoom really better than a 3x zoom?

I'm thinking about adding a teleconverter to my 18-35/f1.8 and 50-100/f1.8 lenses.

What is your experience with teleconverters?
