How can pc’s develop RAW as fast as cameras?

I was thinking about how any camera can “develop” raw data in the blink of an eye, but raw development software on the computer takes orders of magnitude longer to do the same thing. I’ve only used Lightroom but have read that other programs are similarly slow, at best maybe being 1-3x as fast....but never approaching the speed of a camera which can develop multiple shots/second.

Is this purely due to cameras having dedicated hardware? Is the time coming where a pc can nearly instantaneously demosaic and render raw data, maybe using similar hardware mounted on graphics cards?
