Northern lights photography

What are the recommended settings for photographing northern lights?

I have tried Manual with ISO 3200, but I am limited 1" shutter speed, which is too short to adequately capture the dim lights.  I am getting a very light image, but it is barely visible.   When I try to set the shutter speed to 15", the ISO defaults to 100 and no image is captured.  I've tried the P setting and can set the ISO and aperture, but cannot set the shutter speed.

To top it off, my flip screen has stopped working.  Not sure why,  too cold?

Can anyone provide advice on either of these issues?
