improving on sensor size discussions

Many arguments in posts on this forum are addressed as a sensor effect which actually is a lens effect. It's an old kind of discussion which has many good explorations. One is the 'Equivalence' concept (see dpr article).

Roger N. Clark (http://www.clarkvision.com/index.html) has setup many articles since 2012 (or earlier) digging into the technical background of digital photography. The following should be a good start for some to rethink their sensor size arguments:

Putting the above concepts to real world photography, the fundamental physics tells us:

  • When then lens aperture diameters are the same and the pixels on the subject in the output presentation are the same and the exposure times are the same, then the images from different cameras will show the same depth of field, and the same signal-to-noise ratio regardless of sensor size. (Assumes similar sensor and lens qualities.)
