What's this for?

Hello all. First time poster here, although I've posted a bit over on the Nikon boards.

I have an old Minolta AF 100 2.8 Macro. It's very good. But one thing confuses me--this:

Depth of focus (?) scale on the Minolta 100 2.8 Macro

This is where you'd find a depth-of-field scale on many lenses, and it sort of resembles a depth-of-field scale--but the only range is the highest f-stop (32), and they appear to be too close together to be meaningful. Even if this were correct--it does not appear to give the correct depth of field--it wouldn't be useful at any other setting. Can someone out there explain to me what this is for and how to interpret it?

Thanks,

Jim
