Shadow/Highlight control is definitely better in the newly released version.

However it's worth trying the HDR persona too. First make sure you've set the develop module to 32-bit HDR. Open the RAW file. Develop, then send it into the HDR persona.

There you can do a great job of lifting shadows and recovering highlights using the HDR controls sparingly without making a garish clown-soup HDR image.
