As long as you are planning to capture some stationary birds, the bridge cameras can do a lot for their price ( some time better than DSLR  - in my case) .  Their massive zoom capability helps you get better photos of birds in ideal situation ( right amount of light, not too far away , not moving much etc). I own few DSLRs ( not expensive lenses) and bridge camera. I am a big fan of Canon SX50 - easy to carry , I do not carry a big bag and heavy DSLRs. These cameras provide photo opportunity for all type of situations ( closer or far away).

I am attaching few from my SX50s.

I have seen really very good quality bird photos from Nikon P900, Sony HX300 and some Panasonic bridge cameras in other forums.
