The so called micro-step drive system is for smoothing operation when the diaphragm does change, either through user input or auto exposure.

Zooming in and out while in manual exposure mode does not involve closing and opening the diaphragm in the 12-35, the 35-100 or any other constant aperture zoom.

Come on, it does. There is the video above and my copy does exactly the same. I have just looked at it. And it is a well known phenomenon, I knew about it when I bought the lens a couple of years ago, so I was not surprised. You should really listen a bit more to people who own the lens and know something about it.
