Any tips/suggestions on shooting pageant head shots with shiny cowboy hats?

The ladies will have western cowboy hats on with silver or shiny medal on it. Any tips on shooting headshots where the metal on the hat won't be an issue in terms of affecting the light coming off my TCM TTL speedlight?

This will also be only shot indoors against a wall.

Here is an example

I have all the gear needed.

I was thinking to:

1) Shoot off-camera flash (as you can tell by this pic, the flash is coming from the photographer's left about 35 degrees)

2) Use my strap on diffuser strapped onto my speedlight and shoot towards the roof with the diffuser adjusted vertically.

3) Have my flash positioned at about the subjects' height of their shoulder so I can limit the amount of light hitting the hat.
