Indeed, I am being made aware of how good the Old 12-40 was in retrospect. It was possible to shoot with reckless abandon using it!
Do you know for a fact if the Fuji 16-55 f2.8 is as good?
Only what I've read - and the tests. I'm not terribly impressed with the 18-55, but feel it is a better-than-average kit lens (not saying much). Bought a cheap XC 50-230ii - and feel it is just plain optically better overall - with consistent sharpness and freedom from PF, CA, etc. Sure, not great build, and very slow... but EX optically. So, the higher end Fuji lenses test out very well - and that is apparent with the 16-55. Sure should be - at that price point.
Since you seem to be using CaptureOne (?), do you know how they handle Fuji lens profiles?
You know what? I'm not terribly fond of the few lens profiles I have (mostly Pentax lenses) - and Capture One provides only one for Fuji AFAIK (X 100). On wide lenses, I actually like to see a bit of barrel (unless the scene requires straightened lines). I didn't like the LR profiles either - where more of my lenses are profiled. I tend to let the programs do the CA removal, and I am not bothered by modest light fall off for most scenes. PF removal works nicely when needed.
So, I'm adjusting manually what would be done in a lens profile. I tend to under-adjust compared to what you get in the profiles. To some extent, I believe over-manipulation gives you artificiality. That's probably why I'm not impressed with the Fuji film sims.
I don't process a ton of images (probably only 5-10% of my shots - and I am predominantly shooting in single frame mode). So, I tend to adjust every processed shot to personal taste, even the various sharpness and NR settings are individual.
I feel pretty strongly that Capture One v. 11 is a pretty darn major upgrade - and certainly worth the free trial when you have time. Not only are the Fuji files processing with fewer issues (none, really), but they process quicker now. The new features - especially layers - are a huge step forward.
