I still haven't found a general purpose zoom lens
1

About a year ago upgraded from a Rebel to the 80D and built a nice lens collection since then. But what I am still missing is a suitable general purpose lens. I mainly shoot indoor events and occasionally other things. So my most needed focal range sits somewhere beetween 18 and 100mm (APS-C) and 2.8 or faster.

With the Sigma 50-100 1.8 I have a great one for the longer reach. But below 50mm it gets complicated. Currently I am using primes (EF-S 24, EF 35 f/2 IS). The 35mm is my preferred one.

But I can't decide on a zoom. What would you do? Or what do you use for similar shooting?

Here is my wishlist:

  • Sigma 18-35 1.8 Art: Would be awesome but does not work on my 80D and especially not on my M5 (DPAF problems). I have given up finding a working copy.
  • Canon EF-S 17-55mm 2.8: This lens could not convince me so far, some like it, some do not like it. For IQ and build qulity it is a bit expensive to my mind. And old.

FF options:

  • Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8 L II: Although I rarely shoot wider than 24mm in low-light, I still think that 24mm is a bit too tight to be in my preferred range. On the other hand this would be a step to upgrade to FF somewhere in the future.
  • Third party 24-70mm 2.8: Not as sharp as Canon but IS, maybe Canon will finally accomplish one with IS?
  • Canon EF 16-35mm 2.8 L III: Great general purpose focal length on APS-C, but very expensive and not so great IQ on APS-C.
  • Tamron SP AF 15-30mm 2.8: Interesting range, but too heavy for a general purpose lens.

And then some more third party offerings for EF-S:

  • Sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4.0 C: Size, weight is great, even the max aperture on the long end does not bother me, on paper it is a nice lens, but IQ seems to be not so nice.
  • Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 for APS-C: well, quite old now...

Did I miss some important option? Maybe I am really better of upgrading to a 6D...
