A6500+ E 10-18/4 samples (Hokkaido in winter)

I always bring this lens when travelling. I realise most of my favourite shots with this lens are at 10mm; I guess I like the extreme perspective and ability to fit as much of the environment in the frame as possible.

It's a pretty sharp lens, about on par with my 16-70/4, i.e. good central and mid frame sharpness, not the sharpest in the edges/corners at f4-f5.6 but sharpens up well as you stop down for depth of field. Actually I did one test shot at 16mm F11 vs my Sigma 16/1.4 at F11 and pixel peeping did not show material differences; probably diffraction limited at F11.

Sunstars are not bad, perhaps slightly above average though I've not yet made time to critically compare sunstars vs other lenses. I put one sunstar sample below.

Full resolution images for your pixel-peeping pleasure.

10mm, F8, 1/250th, ISO 250

10mm, F5.6, 1/13th (handheld), ISO 1250. Funky bar in Niseko that has a fridge door as its entrance - need to duck.

10mm, F8, 1/125th, ISO 100. Shirahige falls.

Same as above except at 13mm, for comparison.

10mm, F10, 1/160th, ISO 100

10mm, F9, 1/400th, ISO 200. Asahiyama Zoo penguin walk. You can imagine how close I am to the penguins here based on 10mm focal length. The sides are bit untidy but I liked this image the most of the penguin wide shots I took, due to the fellow on the right looking at the info board.

Panorama of 5x vertical photos at 10mm, F8, 1/125th, ISO 100.

18mm, F11, 1/125th, ISO 100. Taken from room hence can see window reflection on the left.

13mm, F16, 1/60th, ISO 100. Used F16 for the more defined sunstar, though it does lead to some loss of sharpness due to diffraction.

10mm, F5.6, 1/125th, ISO 3200. I like the perspective here that's only possible with an ultra-wide angle.
