crop question

When you take a picture of a duck, let's say, with a 1.5 crop camera and a 400 hundred mm lens it's supposed to be the equivalent of a 600mm lens.

But isn't that just the way it appears in the smaller frame because of the crop?  You're not really seeing it as if you took it with a true 600mm lens on a full frame are you?

The crop camera picture doesn't put you closer to the duck so you can see more details.  It just crops away more so it is more prominent in the frame but you're not really any closer.   Right?

It's not like you're actually walking up closer to the duck, you're just seeing less of the lake it's floating on.  Right?

And if that is correct then, a 600 mm equivalent lens with a 1.5 crop factor is really a just a 400mm lens with less in the picture.  Right?

Appreciate any help in making sure of what I think I know.  Thx
