Compatibility

When the universally used M42 mount was replaced many years ago by Pentax with the K- mount because of the ease of changing lenses – there was much discussion at that time about standardising such bayonet systems among different camera producers. But the conservation of specificity aiming to protect available lens production prevailed up to the present day.

We are now at the point where – in spite of the optical excellence generally offered for SLR cameras – the market is still restricted by availability for specific mounting systems.

The general public is, on the other hand, fully satisfied by imagery produced by more simple modern equipment (such as smartphones..) and does not require higher image quality. And that quality has become increasingly better. That has not been the case until recently – and one can see the related disinterest for simple conventional digital cameras.

The way for SLR cameras would reside in better compatibility in the "simple" question of lens mounting. That would entail serious restructuration from a marketing point of view. But I believe that it is in the long term a question of survival.
