SL1 Shutter Speeds

Can anyone suggest how to take the fastest pic using the external shutter cable. You can short tip to gnd to get the shutter to go, but are there any setting on the camera to make taking the pic go very fast from the time you short the cable? I am seeing some lag and I am seeking a way to reduce that lag, if possible.

I am using M mode live-view with 1/4000 shutter speed, and, it sits in pre-focus mode before shutter (apparently even in M mode sitting in pre-focus mode makes taking a pic faster).

Also, I have captured some lag between real moving object and live-view LCD, approx 20msec worth of lag. My question is, does the actual light on cmos also realize this same lag, or is the sensor ahead by 20+ msec because live-view is behind by 20ms and then there's a little time for the shutter to actually open?
