Why adapter may affect the IQ even though it has no glass in it?

Read some articles on using the adapter, saying it may affect the edge sharpness. Initial thought was how can it be possible as there is no glass in the adapter. Then I thought there is a possibility that adding an adapter may affect the distance between the sensor and various glasses within the lens. When focuses perfectly in the center, the edges may not be perfect as the glasses are not designed natively for Sony

Is that a possibility? Just a thought.
