From bud to blossom

My milkweed plant, Asclepias curassivica, has started blooming. One of the pleasures of a garden is to be able to watch a plant's various cycles of its life.

The seeds have long since been dispersed by wind, and the brown shells will eventually drop off. New flower buds have appeared.

From a few months ago: the beautiful seeds being held in a delicate filament, waiting for the wind to carry them away!

A few buds have opened. Ants are the most frequent visitors to the flowers.

The most important visitor will be the Monarch Butterfly, whose larvae depend on milkweed plants. I saw one a week ago but didn't have my camera handy...
