Is a tripod really that essential/mandatory?

Hey,

I enjoy landscape photography and noticed that a steady, solid and heavy tripod is always among the most recommended parts of the kit. I get the point for long exposures, astro-photography and filter use but are tripods such a big deal for photos during the day?

Especially on trips and hikes, a tripod is additional weight and setting it up every time can cause delays and also annoy fellow people in my experience.

So what's your opinion?
