Can one use an i-TTL flash on the Nikon D100?

I have a Yongnuo YN685 Speedlite that works great on my Nikon D200. I  also own a Nikon D100, which uses Nikon's older D-TTL system. I would like to also use this flash with the D100, even if it's just in manual mode, with no TTL functionality. I've been hesitant to just attaching the flash to the camera's hotshoe and seeing what happens, as I don't want to damage either the flash or the camera. If putting the flash in the hotshoe isn't a good idea, is there another approach that would work to connect the flash to the camera?
