D750 AF assist light in live view

I very recently purchased a D750 mostly because it handles high ISO/low light noise so well.  It’s a great camera!

In the summer I like to photograph nocturnal moths which require chasing them as they fly around garden plants in extremely low light conditions. It is very difficult to do this using the viewfinder, especially at low angles and there is very little time for manual focus as they flutter about. For this, autofocus using live view works very well.

Now I have found that the in-camera AF assist light in the D750 does not work in live view. Not only that, but the AF assist light in external speedlights is non-functional when using live view as well!  This is confirmed by Nikon Support.

Huh? Why in the world would Nikon completely disable AF assist in live view? It works fine on their CoolPix CP880, CP7700, etc., but not the D750?

I guess I’m not really asking a question, just blowing off steam in total bewilderment.  As far as I know there is no workaround other than a flashlight.
