how i'm learning lighting a little (as an amateur)

I'm noticing the highlights and shadows.

I'm watching TV shows noticing the lighting.

I'm noticing the sun, fill light, reflective surfaces.

I have been reading and putting to good use Roberto Valenzuela's book Picture Perfect Lighting, which is really good.

I'm lighting my own shots using the methods I am learning.

I thought you couldn't take a good portrait in bright sunlight, but you can.

I thought you needed complicated lighting but you don't.
