Re: Is there a digital stereo camera I can use to get Holmes stereoviews?
I own a Fuji W3. There is much I like about the camera, especially being able to view the 3D image in 3D on the autostereoscopic display on the back of the camera. However, a high level of jpeg compression is applied and the images don't hold up very well when enlarged. The W3 is out of production for quite some time now. Occasionally they show up for sale new on eBAY etc but at rather high prices. Used ones are routinely found for sale but often have a lot of use on them. Some have noted issues with the lens zoom after many images and zooming in and out (wear of some plastic parts in the mechanism). It is not uncommon to have one of the images (saved in .mpo format) slightly out of focus.
If you would like to go digital and you already own a digital SLR (DSLR) camera or are considering to purchase one new or used, then you might consider the Loreo 3D Lens in a Cap which is a beam spliter that mounts on camera instead of the lens. I also own the older version of the Loreo 3D LIC. It has many limitations but probably performs very similar to your film Loreo 3D camera. An older but very good used DSLR like a Nikon D80 or Nikon D90 can be had for well under $200 US. The Loreo 3D Lens in a Cap is made in different versions for Nikon, Canon etc (I have Nikon). You can order directly from Loreo's website and www.Berezin.com also has these for sale.
Many have a preference for the also discontinued Panasonic 3D1 3D camera over the Fuji W3. The Panasonic is better suited to indoor shots due to the tighter lens spacing. Unfortunately it does not have a 3D display (just shows a 2D). I rarely see the Panasonic 3D1 for sale on eBay and used prices remain very high. I would like to buy a good used one to try out.
