A 20 bit A/D converter

This is a thought experiment.

Lets say that the camera has a 20 bit A/D converter. That is one million+ values. That is substantially more photons than the pixels can detect.

Let us then adjust the pre amplifier and the A/D converter so that when the sensor clips then the A/D converter just do not clip.

This camera could be exposed after ISO 100 to approx. ISO 100,000 and still have 10 bits of image data at ISO 100,000. Without adjusting any ISO.

I would say that this is a great advantage.

Two questions

  • Are 20 bit A/D converters reasonable?
  • Are we prepared to increase space usage from 14 to 20 bits for this?
