12-50mm lens - flaws

I bought a very cheap copy of this lens to check out whether I liked the 12mm end, and the 43mm sort-of-macro. I do, so I've kept the lens. Its only real flaw is that much of the coating on the front of the lens has been rubbed away (I've no idea how). I suspect that this is a contributor to the flare(s) I see in the two images below:

There is a misty grey area on the left, several circular bright patches in the middle and a green swipe on the right. My question is, do you know which of these flares would be caused by the failure of the lens coating, and which might have other causes? If, for example, one might be typical of any 12mm lens with the position of the sun as it is? Or a bit of dust on the surface?

I'm curious because I don't know whether to buy a new copy or change my practices!

Thanks for any help

Maggie
