There was a thread a few days ago asking which was the "best" portrait lens.

I think "best" of anything is a trick question unless there is a qualifier (budget, type of portrait, etc.). I am not sure which is the "best" but the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AIS is certainly a legend. For less than $200 USD, it may also be one of the most affordable portrait lenses.

More than 3 decades after it was released, it still takes amazing photographs!

I got it as one of my first lenses with my first DSLR (D1h). It has survived 4 generations of cameras and still performs well on a D3/4 and even the 800 series cameras.

All the samples below were taken this month (Feb 2018)!

Until I get my 135 ART, this will continue to be part of my lens rotation.

A must have for those looking for a great portrait lens on a budget.
