Going to 100 MP on 44x33, what is your take?

Hi,

Sony has pre-announced the IMX461 100MP, backside illuminated 44x33 MP sensor. As far as I understand, it is the next generation 44x33 sensor from Sony. Sony will also make a 150MP sensor at 54x40 mm with the same pitch.

Obviously, the 100 MP is beneficial when printing very large.

The areas where benefits arise otherwise is better suppression of aliasing. The 50 MP sensors have pitch large enough to yield significant aliasing. I guess that 100 MP will be close to aliasing free at f/8?

Hopefully, Sony will add on sensor phase detection and also some improvement for large beam angle tolerance.

I would guess that when the 100 MP sensor arrives, MFD just moves to the new sensor, and it's 150MP sister in the larger 54x40 mm format. I don't think it makes sense to develop a new 50 MP 44x33 mm sensor. It is a lot of development effort and needs to be sold at a much lower price.

What is your take on the issue?

Best regards

Erik
