Thank you very much for this post. My normal set up is a 5Diii with various lenses but as I’m lucky enough to travel a lot carrying this gear has become tedious. For the last few weeks i have been researching different options to save my back !!
Firstly i chose quickly m4/3 over APS-C but then the difficult choice was over a few body options which I narrowed down to Oly M1ii or Pana G9.
Your images and reasoning have well and truly tipped the balance to Oly
I just need to work out which lenses to buy now.
I've read great things about the E-M1 II + Oly 12-100, looks like a fantastic combo to travel.
It’s a beautiful combination Jose. And I love your photos too...
A popular Aussie song starts, “I’ve been around the world a coupla times or maybe more”! And that sums me up pretty well. Like you, I’ve tried a few different systems since 2013. Prior to that I was a very loyal Canon shooter going back to the 70’s and my AE-1. I had several Sony models, all mirrorless, FF and APS-C, 3 different RX models, then last year I tried my first M43, an EM5.2. After trying a couple Oly and Panny models, I have decided to run with an EM1.2, plus the 12-100 and 12-40 Pro, a P25/1.7 (cheap but nice prime) and maybe one or two others. I have a 75-300 which is just okay at 300 so will likely swap it for something better in due course. As I don’t shoot long all that often, the 300/f4 is a bit hard to justify right now. I will probably keep the EM5.2 as backup and GF8 as a pocket shooter too.
I’ve come to the same conclusion that many here have said... M43 is just fun and there’s a contentment using them. Hang, I even like using my tiny GF8 since it is like a pocket sized P&S yet I can still attach any M43 lens should I wish too. Plus I can use it’s remarkable 12-32 or 35-100 on my bigger bodies too. Flexibility with hardly a bum lens in the range.
As I get older, lugging around a big DSLR and lenses just doesn’t appeal anymore. I watched the Northrup’s YouTube on birding last night. Those humongous 600mm lenses were simply daunting. Since I’m not printing 30x20 images I see no need to use such large lenses when I can get a perfectly good (enough) image from either my M43 system or the RX10III which is not at all bad at 600mm although a little less of a BIF camera than more dedicated systems and another reason I’m not jumping out to get a 100-400 or 300 right now.
Oh, and that 12-100 Pro? It’s simply a wonder of a lens. I’ve never had any zoom that is so good at every focal length and from wide open. You can shoot at whatever aperture you want (though best kept below f8) or let it decide without much worry, yet is you take control, which I can see from your photos you do with great results, it is just fun. On the EM1.2, it’s 6.5 stops of stabilisation is just wonderful. Not that you would be able to get images like your bridge scene without a tripod. The 12-100 has become my most used lens.
Happy shooting!
I am glad to hear you have "bonded" with the 12-100 as much as I have hahah...

M43 equivalence: "Twice the fun with half the weight"
"You are a long time dead" -
Credit to whoever said that first and my wife for saying it to me. Make the best you can of every day!
