In the Feb 2018 gallery is an earlier hike (2-10-18) in which I used the 18-135 in cropped mode, hiking the same area as the one yesterday with the 35-70. The day was brighter which may have favored the 18-135.

There are a bunch of these 35-70 lenses on eBay priced under $100.  And if you look at the reviews in the Pentax Lens Review Database, you will see that the reviewers are pleased with the lens and give it relatively high ratings. There are a few K-1 owners reviewing the lens as well. https://lawrencehelm.smugmug.com/RiverPhotography/Feb-2018/i-VhVc7G9/A

I can't say it was a great day for it -- very little blue in the sky for the most part, but the lens in PP does seem very sharp.  I wouldn't rate it lower than the 18-135 or 80-200 in the Feb 2018 gallery.  I was a bit concerned about the sky shots, which were hampered by leagues of gnats.  I did try to delete evidence of them using a Lightroom tool, but the gnats were replaced by little white circles.  I left the gnats alone in some of the shots.  There are a couple of shots showing blue sky and the 35-70 showed promise; so it is probably as good as the 18-135 and 80-200 on identical days.

On the previous hike I used the 80-200 on a much better day; so the shots seem better than those from the 37-70, but the Pentax reviewers rate the 80-200 at 7.95 and the 35-70 at 8.78.  At the moment I have more confidence in the 80-200 than the 35-70, but suspect they are probably equally excellent.  An added benefit for the hiker is that the 35-70 weighs 8.3 oz (235 g) and the 80-200 weighs 10.4 oz (295 g).  Thus, with 18.7 oz the K-1 hiker can get excellent quality from 35mm to 200mm --no weather resistance however; so the hiking needs to occur in Southern-California-type weather.

The 35-70 also has Macro functionality which I didn't use.
