OK, not having a sign to test with, here are some additional images taken of a book from 10 feet away. It is night, so I did add lighting. And both cameras were on a tripod (even the $20 Canon comes with a mount hole).

First, the Canon. Tiny sensor, low resolution, only a 3X optical zoom. Digital zoom turned off. This semi-vintage Canon sells for $20-25 on eBay.

Straight from camera:

One paragraph, cropped on computer. It's only barely legible because it's so faint, but that could be fixed in post-processing or by changing the exposure via the camera's very limited user controls.

And here, again, is my kid's camera. Nikon's bottom-of-the-line purchased for $300 on closeout. The 55-200mm lens used in this photo was included with the camera.

Full image, straight from camera with no editing. I think you could read the entire book this way if for some reason it wasn't possible to get closer, if the book was radioactive for instance.

And this is one paragraph cropped from the above image. I'd call this perfectly readable, even though the image was taken from 10' away. Good crisp text, no distortion or other bad optical flaws, and a nice contrast.
