The 600 mm f/4 Nikkor ED-IF [AIS] is an overlooked gem IMHO. It's certainly sharp @ f/4. I originally bought mine for wildlife/birds, but more recently have been using it for deep-sky astrophotography, where it reigns supreme in terms of being the commercially produced lens with the best light gathering power/largest clear aperture. A 30 second exposure with this lens @ f/4 would record stars stars faint enough that they would require an 18 inch telescope to visually observe them. Best of all it has very little aberration, and is usable @ f/4 on star fields (especially using a crop-sensor), which says a lot about how good an optical instrument it is.

I am still learning to process the astro images, but I do have a few garden bird shots I took with it long ago which I can share. These were all taken with a D70, and probably an extension tube.

This one may have been slightly cropped
