GX9 Grip Gripes
2

I was so excited for the GX9 to be announced. The GX8 looked like almost everything I wanted in a camera apart from awful shutter-shock and lack of Bluetooth. A great upgrade from my G6.
I watched rumors.
I waited patiently
And here it is:

I'm the $900 GX9. Please drop me onto concrete. Repeatedly.

I just can't get that image out of my head.
My favorite lens right now is the Panasonic LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm F2.8.
It weighs 305g, about 75% of the GX9's body weight of 407g.
This is just asking to be dropped with broken glass and body.

Sure, they made the awful OEM grip adapter... that blocks easy removal of the battery and SD card. Oh, no worries, USB charging and data, right?! Except, no, because they choose MicroUSB 2.0, so not only will it charge slowly, but getting images off via USB will also be painstakingly slow.
This could have been awesome if they:

  1. Designed it with a GX7 or Sony a6500 sized grip
  2. Didn't block the battery & SD card with the grip accessory
  3. Used USB-C 3.0 so you could just leave the grip accessory attached, get fast charging power and high-speed data transfers so you never have to remove the battery or SD card.

So now I'm leaning towards getting a G85, or maybe waiting until the OM-D E-M5 Mark III is announced - hopefully - someday. Or I'll finally jump ship to Fuji and get the X-H1.
