Other evidence led me to believe that it was old / well-used - it and the classic 5D it came with (priced separately) were very, very weathered. And the seller claimed both the lens and the camera were working fine, but with a dead battery (that they could/should have charged), there was no way for me to confirm this with the camera gear I had on me).

With a broken MF clutch the Auto Focus would still work and the vendor might not necessarily know. But the clutch issue usually comes from a severe drop that breaks the glued connection.

I don’t know if that lens has a MF clutch.

There is an instructible on how to repair a broken MF clutch on a 16-35mm lens - not for the faint hearted.
