Tamron 100-400 on EOS M5 after 7 cloudy days review..
2

So this'll be a little review of the combo.

First thing's first: I haven't tried the lens with any other camera body except the M5.

So, about the combo:

1. (lens specific) The lens sharpness at the long end is OK wide open, better at f 7.1 best at f8.

2. The autofocus on M5 is good in normal conditions and not very good when it's dark(dark dark).

3. I think that using the Focus Limiter is a must! Speeds up the autofocus quite well. Without the focus limiter it can hunt a lot.

4. The weight.. Well it's very easy to hold for long walks.

5. The IS of the lens is very good. I have no problems focusing on a bird/object when using the x10 magnification in the EVF. Yep, the IS works all the time on the M5 but that's canon's fault.

6. (camera specific) The battery holds OK for me.

7. Tracking.. This is tricky, I still need some time to adjust. The combo is not the fastest at tracking objects (eos 70D + Sigma 150-600 was much better) but it's doable. With my Sigma 50-150 OS it tracks much better, but let's not forget that the Tamron is f 6.3 on the long end.

8. (lens specific) No tripod mount.. well, I don't want to by the original, I'll try to find a substitute.

9. (lens specific) No lens case.. But it fits perfectly in my Sigma's 50-150 OS case

So, as I said, the weather was(and still is) not good this days, the pictures are not very good either.

About the pictures:

No noise reduction

No sharpening(default values in CameraRaw, I think it sharpens a little)

Some brightness/shadows/this kind of stuff work.

These pictures are just examples(for the review). Some are heavy crops, some higher ISO's, some where made through window glass. But well, that's it.

Overall I like the combo. Maybe I would prefer to have the Canon 100-400 ii or the PanaLeica 100-400 + E-m1 mark 2.. But the Tamron is 760 bucks, you know

I've had previous experience with the Sigma 150-600 C on 70 D and.. well the sharpness was OK (f8 was the best) the autofocus was OK but somehow not very reliable. I really didn't like the OS and the MFA process (well that's some weird thing). Also my 70D wasn't the most reliable with Sigmas in darker conditions and I didn't have a lot of BIF's and that's why I decided to take M5 + something lighter than 150-600.

so BIF is possible but not easy. 4 out of 9 were sharp, 3 were ok, 2 were bad) AF Servo + 9 fps

No problem with 1/100. crop, taken through a clean window.

Heavy crop, through window. Don't like it but decided to leave it

crop, again through the window.

crop, rather far, through not so very clean window..

Full res, no window, f8

Full res again, no window, f6.3 for comparison with the f8. Not bad I think..
