Many Panasonic camcorders allow creation of timelapse sequences without creating JPEGs, but the shutter speed can be no slower than 1/30 second. That might be OK for a nighttime party scenes, provided there were at least some illumination, but useless for stars or planets. The camcorder shutters are always electronic.

My Panasonic HDC-HS300 has a time lapse setting that can have 1 second/10 seconds/30 seconds/1 minute and 2 minutes intervals and produces .mts video files on completion.  The maximum recording time is 12 hours.  The AC adaptor is recommended to be used for long shots to avoid running the battery down.
