I had this happen a bout 6 months ago but suddenly started working again after reseating a few times and power off and ons.. been OK since but yesterday it stopped again, it does starts for a second sometimes then stops.. but pretty much does not come on at all.. would this have anything to do with the contacts posssibly being not making or dirty, or is it all internal..

Also this lens is a little over 2 years old, I looked at Nikon site and it says warranty is 1 year plus 4 years extended.. so that extended is automatic? or something you have to purchase.. I registered it online when I got it

Nikon service will probably ask you for a copy of your receipt and will fix it no charge. Assuming there is no impact damage.

Sounds like the camera contacts are not connecting with the lens correctly. Just try cleaning the connections on the camera and especially the lens.
Thanks, it happens on all bodies so its not camera contacts..
It does not seem to be body contacts, but it could still be the lens flange contacts.

My advice as a first step is follow the larrywilson suggestion. If this does not work then send it off to Nikon.

Rattling is not unusual in these modern lenses. VR elements floating about. Don’t get too vigorous ;-)
The 300 PF lens has a very slight rattle if gently shaken.

The VR group should be locked following the normal procedure of allowing a couple of seconds for VR to stop running before detaching the lens.

May I suggest that you photograph your lens before returning it to Nikon? So that in future you can verify for yourself whether there had been impact damage.

I thought so as well until I had my 80-400 G lens cleaned. The Nikon representative told me they would service it irrespective of it being registered as long as I had the receipt and it was under 5 years.

I had registered the lens so it was a moot point. However, I continue to register my Nikon equipment in case the representative was incorrect. For what it’s worth...

Good Idea, this lens doesn't have a mark on it right now.. at minimum it will tell me if they man handled it :)
