You can likely get by without a tripod as long as you can keep your shutter speed around 1/2 (subjective) your focal length. If it's breezy you will likely want a faster shutter speed anyway.

The advantage of a tripod, other than guaranteeing no camera shake, is that you can just about always shoot at base ISO. And if you want to bracket your exposures they will align perfectly in post. And of course long exposures require a tripod too.

My general approach is "if it's worth making the photograph, it's worth carrying a tripod". If you invest in a good one it will last many years.
