Not Adobe

I know many of us here loathe the Adobe subscription license. I am a photographer and use Photoshop daily in my day job as a pre-press image specialist (which I balance with photo editing and other tasks related to my position as Director of Photography for a small publisher). I am a full Adobe Creative Cloud subscriber, which I use at work and in my home studio. I have used Photoshop since version 2.5 and I've developed work flows that serve me well for my personal work and employment.

I am constantly reviewing new software that might replace Creative Cloud. One candidate is On1 Photo Raw, which I purchased in 2017 at a discount, for $79. I've used it a little, but I am reluctant to climb the learning curve without complete feature set parity with Photoshop and Lightroom.

On1 Photo RAW is a work in progress and it is getting closer. Yet, the clone tool still is still crude when compared to Photoshop; it's something I use constantly. Now, On1 has released its latest and wants $100. What? That's only $20 less than an Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom annual subscription. On1 offers an entire ecosystem for photographers, especially for those who want to improve their skills. But, many of the memberships, training videos and additional software, cost more. Adobe offers an extensive library of free videos plus web platforms to post portfolios. Plus independent authors have posted a huge library of tutorials on YouTube. The price differential seems insignificant.

So, is there really a difference when we compare price between the subscription and one-time charge? Agreed, On1 does not require an upgrade to continue to use the software, so a user can skip the next $100, but cannot access new features. I know for some new features are not important, but for me, seeking life without Photoshop, it's essential.

I'll continue my subscription to Adobe Cloud, as it seems nothing will adequately replace it any time soon. I know there are other alternatives, such as Capture1, Affinity Photo and DXO, but they don’t have it for me. But I'll keep looking.
