I don't know if the new M50 will incorporate a larger sensor for aspect ratio flexibility (I doubt it), but I think this is a feature that will be adopted by more manufacturers.

- Now that larger sensors are no longer prohibitively expensive, this feature will not cost that much to implement.

- Being able to capture more image outside of the default sensor area could improve a lot of images.

- This would also allow image aspect ratios to be modified for different image destinations (e.g. I think IG has a square thumbnail.)

- It effectiively (and inexpensively) increases the number of mpix that a chosen image has.

This feature could be the next big thing in digital photography. It gives photographers a new valuable feature without costing manufacturers much money.

(As someone else in the thread points out, Panasonic has recently done this and it has been well received)

Sony could make this move first than Canon. Unlike any other mirrorless brand, Sony is the only other who offers FF lenses as well. Multiaspect shooting is great but Extended size shooting is the icing on the cake.

The obstacle I see with such Extended models is not cost but a marketing containment stratey to push for FF bodies sales.
