Why no 40mm pancake (or similar)?

I have never seen a 70mm for real, but this is what I read as well. If it only extends in close focus range, I can live with it.

I am not after a real collapsible design - I own the Panasonic 12-32mm and I do not like it at all because of this, as I have the camera always ready to shoot, so the 12-32mm would then be extended all the time. This is precisely why I like pancake lenses.
