Why no 40mm pancake (or similar)?

Thanks for the explanation.

Two things:

1. You say "Focal length can never be greater then total lens length plus flange length and usually must be shorter." But isn't the entire point of a telephoto lens to enable a virtual crossover point ahead of the lens? Telephoto prime lenses are often much shorter than their focal lengths.

2. As far as I can tell, the Pentax 70mm doesn't necessarily extend, but only extends when focused on close objects. When focused on infinity it is not extended, or at least this is what the accounts I've read suggest.
