So, Olympus entry level camera comes with a "long in the tooth" 16Mpix sensor and a built-in battery and its so-so kit zoom for a whooping price of 699E.
And it sits at #58 and #59 at Amazon.de best sellers charts.
Interestingly, E-PL8 (now discounted) is on #8.
Just after Fuji released its entry level camera with a "state of art" 24Mpix APS-C and phase+contrast detect AF and a OIS lens for 599E
That sits on #52. Wouldn't you expect it to be higher?
And with the similarly speced GX850 selling for 450-500E with a much better kit lens.
But despite the more attractive price, it's not flying off the shelves and sits at #50. It is outmatched by it's predecessor, GF-7 at #12 (not a surprise at 350 EUR with the nice 12-32 kit zoom).
And a Canon 24 Mpix APS-C M100 + kit lens at an introductory price of 599E
#23, outsold by a double kit bundle which sits at 18. Which Canon mirrorless cam is selling the best? The 300 EUR worth of crappiness in the form of M10
That's how Canon captures the market in unit terms. It just sells old stock at bottom low prices.
Anyway, this is largely useless trivia,
I agree. Quite useless trivia, these Amazon sales ranking. It would be nice if we can just evaluate cameras using snapshots of Amazon rankings.
but seeing what entry level mirrorless cameras are sold for, you could easily make a case that E-PL9 should take part in this race to the bottom and be priced in the 300-400 EUR range, where it would probably just generate losses or some marginal profit for Olympus.
Alas, it seems like Olympus simply chooses to price the new model higher and picking up more price sensitive customers by discounting the older model. And the older model can piggy back on the marketing campaign of the new model (they are similar enough).
Sounds smart to me. Not only are you selling more than some of the competition, you do that at a higher price point. Win-win.
BTW, what's the best selling MILC camera on German Amazon? Da daaa... Sony A6000 It's been sitting at the top non-stop for most of the time, only temporarily dethroned by some hotter new releases.
Somewhat shockingly, E-M10 Mark III is at #3. Go figure.
