Difficult to understand what makes the E-PL9 so expensive?
Any idea?
Olympus think they can sell it at that price?
It's a fashion item.
I don't think so. It's an entry level camera made to attract P&S upgraders.
How many P'n'S cameras there really are?
Already that market is like... Dead.. Because smartphones.
I explained in this thread that my P&S terminology was outdated. In the "P&S upgrders", I include smartphone users that are likely to upgrade one day. A huge market.
It's not priced based on adding up its technical features. It's not aimed at people like you (or me).
see above
Nope.
I don't buy iPhones because I think they are overpriced compared to devices that are alternatives (for me). Millions of people do, though.
Except that Olympus is not Apple and that iPhones are eating the market of that kind of camera.
Iphone is a minor phone in smartphone market. Over 80% is for Android phones.
Correct, I should have said phones, not iPhones.
Olympus presumably feel the alternatives you list aren't really competitors in the minds of actual likely purchasers - and who knows, maybe they are correct.
I don't see many cosmetic differences between the E-PL9 and X-A5, for example.
Seems that Fuji is following Olympus... So doesn't that like, say that, Olympus is doing many things right?
Of course they are. Olympus has always been an innovative company that dares to take risks. I admire that. I was myself a long time Olympus user. But their recent direction is not to my taste.
I assume they know more about pricing and marketing cameras than me.
I really wonder if they do
Well, they seem to have turned to profit in few years compared to previous years. So something they are doing right...
Milking customers can lead to profits in the short term, but failure in the long term.
